In his letter to “all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints,” Paul casts out an urgent appeal: “Now is the moment for you to wake up from your slumber” (13.11). Although scholars tell us that these words were written between A.D. 54 and 59, we – that is, you and I – are being summoned in this age and in this time.

When Dr. Cory Andrew Labrecque moved from Montreal to Atlanta to take up a professorship at Emory last year, his eyes were opened to a whole new experience of Church. Come and hear how a (relatively young) academic – in a field that is sometimes hostile to the voice of religion – weaves faith, reason, and conviction together while drawing inspiration from the Church’s rich intellectual tradition.

Engaging providential moments in his life as an observant Catholic in a largely non-observant home and culture, Cory mulls over an important question that we are called to answer as the People of God: What does it mean to be “summoned” as a Catholic in a world (home, social, or work environment) that is increasingly cynical (and illiterate) about religion?

Table Discussion and Q&A will follow the presentation.

LabrecqueSpeaker Bio:

Dr. Cory Andrew Labrecque is the Raymond F. Schinazi Junior Scholar in Bioethics and Religious Thought at Emory University’s Center for Ethics, where he also holds appointments in the School of Medicine and the Department of Religion. He earned a B.Sc. in Anatomy and Cell Biology, an M.A. in Religious Studies with specialization in Bioethics, and a Ph.D. in Religious Ethics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he was a course lecturer in the Faculty of Religious Studies, the Institute of Parasitology, and the Department of Physiology for several years.

Cory’s research lies at the intersection of religion (with a particular interest in Roman Catholicism), medicine, biotechnology, environment, and ethics; he is interested in the impact of emerging/transformative technologies (especially those related to regenerative and anti-ageing medicine) on philosophical and theological perspectives on human nature and the human/nature relationship.

For over a decade, Cory also served in the Anglophone Region of the Roman Catholic Diocese of St-Jean-Longueuil (on the south shore of Montreal) as a pastoral agent responsible for catechesis and faith education.
